if you want to take a leisurely high fashion stroll down rue charlot you better move your arse. designers, gallerists, and hotel owners are snapping up space on the small street faster than you can say "haute haut marais." martin grant, tsumori chisato and yohji yamamoto recently nabbed charlot addresses and the costes brothers, of hotel costes, just bought a former squat on the corner of charlot and de perche.
WHERE TO SHOP
wedged between the chic newcomers is former festival of hyères winner and clothing designer gaspard yurkievich (43 rue charlot and an atelier just a few buildings down) who is condsidered one of the the older residents (6 years).
moving along, something of a scandinavian trend started with the opening of anders' hus (27 rue charlot), a two-story boutique designed to look like a danish living room. gallery dansk (31 rue charlot) also specializes in scandinavian design. and for your norse fashion fix, there's plagg (41 rue charlot) selling a well-edited selection of labels from denmark, finland, sweden and norway.
WHERE TO EAT
when you've had enough of fashion and furnishings, have your pick of italian, moroccan, indian, lebanese, and japanese fare. the marché des enfants rouges market combines farm fresh vegetable and fruit stalls alongside an eclectic collection of lunching restos. a favorite among locals is chez taeko. sushi standards are served alongside delectable traditional dishes from kyushu (the most southern of the japanese islands).
either way, take a seat at one of the buzzing communal picnic tables. (stella does when in town.)
