the ironically (or then again, maybe not) named socialista, a buzzed-about glamour-age-of-havana-inspired boite, already had our attention. run by armin amiri (bungalow 8) and backed by honchos giuseppe cipriani, ben silverman, trudie styler (aka mrs., er, sting), and harvey weinstein, the saloon is at a killer locale in the west village right on the hudson. putting a dwarf at the door is just overkill.

the neat trick here, starting with the "official" open today (boldfacers have been there already), is that the spot is an elitist resto... for the masses. sashay into the downstairs, a "peasant style" equal-opportunity café that will seat up to 85 walk-ins, serving traditional cuban cuisine including steaks, rice & beans, and corn-on-the-cob (all from team cipriani). you can imagine that proper behavior there will give you a better chance of being admitted into the private upstairs - a large colonial-style loft with a black and white tiled floor, bay windows, ceiling fans and couches, reminiscent of old cuban social clubs and featuring live music.

you can imagine that, and then pony up the $600 minimum tab for a table.
