the scene: union square. the perp: former law & order star benjamin bratt. the charge: the newly opened irving mill.
only in new york can you get a resto-running fam, a farmer's market-friendly chef and a bratt to open the latest fresh food spot. irving mill is the most recent project from sergio and mario riva (of candela and the diner fame) that promises seasonal american food served up by chef john schaefer, who calls tom colicchio a colleague. not convinced? irving mill counts on the deep pockets of bratt and jill hennessey (another L&O alum) as investors. sip a red at the front tap room's zinc bar, then dive into stout braised short ribs and rabbit ragout with a side of spaghetti squash and parmesan. black currant tea chocolate mousse or pumpkin streudel helps seal the deal. all while sitting at circular banquettes upholstered with the words of the resto's namesake, rip van winkle author washington irving.
don't worry. unlike rip, you won't be able to fall asleep.
