first there was ramen. then there was shmomofuku. but now there's a new kid in town, and ippudo NY is bringing it all the way from japan.
no fushion frustration here. ippudo is as authentic as you can get. the non-english speaking waiters might be frustrating for some, but others will appreciate their attention to detail (like which side to place your soup spoon). and that's a good thing. at this spot, diners can order two kinds of soup, shiro (white) and aka (red) miso broth, to go with their chewy noodles. each bowl comes filled with a few slices of pork, veggies and plenty of flavor. just don't be alarmed by the soup's creamy color; the broth is a signature recipe and is cooked for 15 hours in a three-step process. don't believe it? take a peek through the peep holes on the way to the loo. in one, you can see the enormous stock pots bubbling away, and in the other? see fresh noodles coming out of a special machine that was brought all the way from japan. how can you pass up a dish that comes straight from the ramen king? you can't. owner shigemi kawahara took home first place (three years in a row) in a TV ramen competition.
it's the kind of royal blessing that guarantees some choice eating.
