last year, designer
nicolas ghesquière's high-tech clothes transformed themselves on the
runway. this year, he's keeping the mod theme going with the recently opened balenciaga store,
located in the mayfair district.
nic's teamed up with french installation artist dominique gonzalez-foerster and
legendary lighting designer benoit lalloz to get the job done fabulously right.
this creative trio has bucked the trend of white gallery-style spaces and gone
for a mod look with colourful character. balenciaga's spring collection of mini
dresses and cycle shorts hang off a jungle gym of bright red, yellow and blue
poles. one area is sectioned off in the shape of a pod that wouldn't look out
of place in 2001. well, the space odyssey version. cool glowing panels on the
ceiling and industrial spot lighting create an edgy feel that keeps the venue
from turning into an oversized kitsch lego set.
you always knew you were a rocket woman. now have great clothes to match.
